Sony has officially announced a new model of the popular PlayStation 5 (PS5) console, featuring a detachable disc drive and an increased 1TB of internal storage. Often referred to as the “PS5 Slim,” this new iteration is slightly slimmer and shorter than its predecessors, effectively replacing both the original PS5 and the PS5 Digital Edition. The new model is priced at $499.99 in the United States, which includes the disc drive, while the PS5 Digital Edition remains available for $449.99.
The new PS5 boasts a significant reduction in volume by more than 30%, accompanied by a reduction in weight of up to 24%, depending on the specific model. Sony has introduced a design change, with a removable bulge on the side of the console that houses the disc drive. This removable drive can be replaced with a side panel.

“There are four separate cover panels, with the top portion in a glossy look, while the bottom remains in matte,” says Sid Shuman, senior director of SIE content communications, in a blog post. If you purchase the base PS5 Digital Edition, you can add the Blu-ray disc drive at a later date, as Sony is selling it separately for $79.99 (€119.99 / £99.99).
Notable design updates include the addition of two slits on each side and dual USB-C ports at the front, as opposed to the single USB-C and USB-A ports on the current PS5. Sony is also including a horizontal stand with this new PS5 model, while a separate vertical stand that is compatible with all PS5 models will be available for $29.99 (€29.99 / £24.99 GBP). Both new PS5 models now come with 1TB of storage, an upgrade from the original 825GB found on the existing PS5.

The new PS5 model is set for release in November in the United States at select retailers and Sony’s PlayStation direct site, with prices starting at $449.99 for the model without a drive and $499.99 for the model with the drive included. Sony’s Sid Shuman mentioned, “It will continue to roll out globally in the following months. Once inventory of the current PS5 model has sold out, the new PS5 will become the only model available.” In Europe, it will be priced at €449.99 for the Digital Edition and €549.99 with the drive. In the UK, it’s £479.99 with the drive or £389.99 for the PS5 Digital Edition.
This official announcement of the updated PS5 model follows months of speculation and leaks. Last year, reports suggested Sony was working on a PS5 with a detachable drive. Additionally, Sony recently concluded its first PS5 sale, with significant price reductions in the UK, Germany, India, and other regions.
